  • NBA reimburses Thunder millions for Kevin Durant’s extension

Comments Off on NBA reimburses Thunder millions for Kevin Durant’s extension
    October 30, 2016 /  Basketball

The NBA’s Board of Governors voted Thursday to reimburse the Oklahoma City Thunder “several million” dollars for an issue regarding the contract of All-Star forward Kevin Durant, Zach Lowe of Grantland reports. Durant signed a five-year, maximum-value extension in the summer of 2010, before the ratification of the newest Collective Bargaining Agreement in 2011. The new CBA sets guidelines for what Lowe calls “super-max” deals. According to Larry Coon’s NBA salary cap FAQ, players can qualify for a super-max contract — which pays them 30 percent of the salary cap — if they meet any of the following criteria: Named to the All-NBA First, Second or Third team at least twice Voted as a starter in the All-Star game at least twice Named the NBA Most Valuable Player at least once Because Durant met those criteria when he signed the contract, the ratification of the new CBA put Oklahoma City on the hook for more money than it was anticipating; the Thunder could not have known the provisions of the new CBA when they inked Durant to his extension. Thursday’s vote, which Lowe says was not unanimous, reimburses the Thunder the difference between what they thought they would owe Durant and what they actually will owe him, under the terms of the CBA. This difference, according to Royce Young of CBS Sports, is “roughly $15 million.” At this point, it’s unclear if the Thunder will also have Durant’s extra salary removed from their cap space, but at the very least the development gives OKC some extra money to play around should ownership be willing to pay the luxury tax.

  • Running Shoes Important Facts That You Should Know

Comments Off on Running Shoes Important Facts That You Should Know
    October 29, 2016 /  Shoes

Athletic shoes are referred with many names, but it is more commonly referred to as sneakers or running shoes. If you never heard about running shoes, well I think you deserve a hefty smack in the middle of your forehead. Too bad Im not in front of you to do you this favor. Instead, I let me educate you about running shoes.

Running shoes are made of soft and flexible materials, and characteristically have rubber soles. Over the years, certain innovations created various types of running shoes with non-rubber soles but the most basic running shoes always have rubber soles. Why rubber soles? Because rubber soles provide greater traction and has a definitive cushion effect to ease the pounding of heels during running. Furthermore, materials that create running shoes are lightweight and flexible that it would do nothing to hamper ones exertion in running. In fact innovations are constantly developed to improve wearer performance.

The first running shoe had a plimsole sole. This sole is created from the process of melding rubber and cloth together called vulcanization. Of course this shoe type wont hit a penny these days but at the time of its inception, it was a wonderful innovation that allowed ease of movement and comfortable wear. Since these running shoes allow movement without noise the term sneakers came out.

Running shoes took a giant step forward when a British company called J.W. Foster and Sons developed the spiked sole. They integrated it to the running shoe and the spiked running shoes were born. Later on, they also changed their name to Reebok. That was somewhere in 1890.

It was 1925 when a German shoe manufacturer named Adolf Adi Dassler made more innovations to the spiked running shoes. He also tweaked this shoe with other materials, making them lighter still. (I hope you wont have problems guessing the name of the company)

When technology advanced rapidly during the 70s, everything also made a huge step forward. Instead of basic designs in making shoes, manufacturers now involved podiatrists in shoe design. Shoe materials were tweaked even more, further lightening the running shoe.

When Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) was developed in late 1970s it also ushered the best modernization of running shoes to date. This substance provides superb cushioning and absorbs shock even better than rubber.

To date competition amongst shoe manufacturers Nike, Adidas, and Asics is very stiff, with each producing their own line of state-of-the-art shoe products and endorsing popular athletes and celebrities to carry the image. That made running shoes a popular trend in the casual market, especially with young people. More often than not, you will notice a youngster with a pair of running shoes than leather. Effective marketing strategies by shoe manufacturers such as Nike, Reebok, and Adidas are by large responsible for the cultural propagation of running shoes.

  • A look at how Chris Froome won the Tour de France

Comments Off on A look at how Chris Froome won the Tour de France
    October 25, 2016 /  Racing

PARIS (AP) — Chris Froome is the second successive British rider to win the Tour de France. Here’s a look at his key moments:

    Stage 1

Froome only had a few difficult moments on the bike. But one of those happened before the race had begun, with Froome tumbling off his bike after clipping a curb and grazing his right knee before the Stage 1 start. He changed bikes and returned to the peloton ahead of the official flag drop to start the Tour. If anything, it was the right time to fall because Froome avoided a heavy crash later on in the stage, when organizers changed the finish line area at the last minute because a team bus was camped on the line and unable to move.

”If that’s the only crash I have this Tour, I’ll take that,” Froome said at the time.

    Stage 8

The first week of the Tour was about avoiding crashes and drinking enough water to cope with the searing heat as the race moved from Corsica and along the Mediterranean to Nice, Marseille and Montpellier. Once the race hit the high mountains of the Pyrenees, Froome launched a devastating attack on the last climb up to Ax 3 Domaines, and none of his rivals could even come close to catching him. That earned him the race leader’s yellow jersey – and the first question about doping. Froome’s incredible uphill speed drew comparisons to serial doping cheat Lance Armstrong, who was stripped of all seven Tour titles. Froome said he understood the suspicion but insisted he is clean. It would be the first of a barrage of questions he and Sky team manager Dave Brailsford would have to answer.

    Stage 9

Isolated in the Pyrenees on a day when his Sky teammates fell apart, Froome had to withstand attacks from rivals all on his own. Colombian climber Nairo Quintana attacked him four times on the last climb but couldn’t break the Briton’s resolve. It was a defining moment as it showed he could defend just as well as he attacks.

    Rest Day 1

Why was this rest day significant? Because Froome and Brailsford had to answer several questions about doping as the atmosphere started to turn sour. Self-professed Twitter experts provided a myriad of data, cycling blogs were full of comparisons with Armstrong and mainstream media outlets were keen to probe into why Froome is so good. It was a mere appetizer compared to what would happen on Rest Day 2.

    Stage 11

Froome comes second to Tony Martin in the first time trial, missing out on victory by 12 seconds. It was still a victorious day for Froome as he finished more than 2 minutes ahead of archrival Alberto Contador and extended his race lead over the Spaniard to nearly 4 minutes.

    Stage 13

For the first and only time, Froome loses to Contador after the Spaniard launched a clever late attack on a windy sprint stage to claw back more than 1 minute. It raised hopes – which proved fleeting – that the 2007 and ’09 champion could close the gap.

    Stage 15

Froome did it again: another solo burst on the last climb up Mont Ventoux in Provence, one of the Tour’s most famed climbs. Froome showed rare emotion as he spoke of the pride he felt wearing the yellow jersey on the 100th Tour. His lead over Contador grew to 4 minutes, 25 seconds.

    Rest Day 2

More questions about doping. Froome and Brailsford again assured reporters that they are racing clean. Brailsford offered to give the World Anti-Doping Agency unlimited access to Froome’s performance data. Froome snapped: ”Lance Armstrong cheated. I’m not cheating. End of story.”

    Stage 17

Froome clinched his third stage victory, finally getting the time trial win he craved on a hilly course. Froome made up ground in the last third of the course after changing bikes, beating Contador by 9 seconds to move 4:34 ahead of him.

    Stage 20(equals)

Froome assured everyone he would not go for any more stage wins in the three tough Alpine stages of the race. He stayed safe on Stages 18 and 19, but could not resist one last go on the penultimate 20th stage, jousting with Quintana and Joaquim Rodriguez on the day’s last climb up to Annecy-Semnoz. This time, Quintana beat him. But Froome still managed to extend his lead over Contador, who slipped off the podium and down to fourth.

    Stage 21

Nothing left for Froome to do except ride safely on the processional stage and then enjoy a glass or three of chilled Champagne.
